Over 200 people arrive in Virginia on Friday
As both the American and Afghan governments prepare for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, the first flight of Afghan allies and their families landed in Dulles, Virginia on Friday. The many translators, interpreters, and on-the-ground aides that helped U.S. forces are extremely at risk of Taliban retaliation, and have been given special visas to temporarily take refuge in the United States.
President Biden gave a speech to welcome the refugees to the country. He called this first arrival of many upcoming relocation flights “an important milestone as we continue to fulfill our promise to the thousands of Afghan nationals who served shoulder-to-shoulder with American troops and diplomats over the last 20 years in Afghanistan.”
